Sweet Virginia's primary activity is raising honeybees that produce a rare and uniquely delicious and healthy 'hyper-local' Northern Virginia wildflower honey. We have hives all over the area - from Falls Church and Great Falls to Gainesville. We even have a few just across the Key Bridge in D.C.
We use our extraordinary, raw honey as an incentive to encourage donations to small, local charitable causes we've adopted.
This year, we expanded into cut flower farming - not only to provide more nectar sources for our bees, but to enjoy their beauty and share them with hospitals, nursing homes and homeless shelters. Miriam's Kitchen in Foggy Bottom is one of our recipients.
As part of that flower operation, we planted over 50,000 sunflowers on the south shore of Lake Manassas. We just thought it'd be neat to see that much beauty in one place. In fact, we thought it might be so spectacular that it'd inspire some corporate sponsors to donate to one of our adopted causes.
This week the field is in full bloom and our plan is working on both fronts. It's magnificent to see - check out the photos that DC's top photographer, Moshe Zusman, took at sunrise on Monday and donated to us. And we've already gotten commitments for over $25,000 from sponsors including Maximus Corporation, Contact Solutions, Diversified Laboratories, First Potomac Realty Trust and several others. We'd like more!
This time, we're working to send kids suffering with life threatening illness from our area to Camp Sunshine on Lake Sebago in Maine.
Sweet Virginia is about celebrating and cherishing the beauty of life. Check out the photos and celebrate with us by clicking here and adding something to our Camp Sunshine campaign.
